Boom! Comics acquires Power Rangers license

Comic book powerhouse Boom! Comics announced to The Hollywood Reporter and Entertainment Weekly that they’ve partnered with Saban Brands to become the new publisher for Power Rangers.  At San Diego Comic-Con this July, they’ll be handing out six introductory single-page issues, each featuring a different one of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.  Boom! says their series will focus exclusively on the MMPR era, targeting those that grew up on it.

“We have big, big plans that will build on the core universe of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers,” said BOOM! Studios editor-in-chief Matt Gagnon. “We can’t give too much away just yet, but the story we’re kicking off with is vast in scope.  Fans of BOOM! know we treat the existing properties we collaborate on with a focus on authenticity and quality.  That’s the same sensibility we’re applying here.  The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers have an awesome fan base and we can’t wait to show them how much fun we’re having.”

The comic series officially begins in January.  Boom! Comics is now the third American publisher of Power Rangers comic books, after Marvel and Papercutz.

Dean Israelite Interview with Movies.com

Dean Israelite, director of the upcoming Power Rangers film, held an interview with Movies.com about his directorial debut film Project Almanac, now on DVD, as well as a few select tidbits about our anticipated Power Rangers movie.  He even addresses a question surrounding POWER/RANGERS, the Adi Shankar-produced and Joseph Khan-directed fan film.

Israelite: We’re in a soft prep phase right now doing a bunch of design work. We’re creating, or I should say re-imagining, the world in a cool, updated, contemporary, really fun way. I think it’s really exciting and we’re on a really interesting, surprising track. I can’t wait to start shooting, which will be in a few months.

Movies.com: Did Joseph Khan’s Power Rangers short create a big headache for you?

Israelite: No, but I wasn’t on the project yet. I’ve only been on the project for, I think, four or five weeks. To me, I think it’s just a demonstration of how vibrant and vital the brand is. I think it’s really exciting that it got so much play. It’s encouraging that there are adults, like me, who are still fans and grew up on it and still want and have an interest to see the Power Rangers matured and brought to screen.

Written by Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller, and produced by Haim Saban, Brian Casentini and Allison Shearmur, this film is a development of Lionsgate and Saban Brands.  It will be released in theaters on January 13, 2017.

Amy Jo Johnson Interview with The Hollywood Reporter

Amy Jo Johnson was recently featured on The Hollywood Reporter website for her directorial debut film, The Space Between.  She also wrote the screenplay and will portray the character Amelia in the project, alongside two of her former Flashpoint cast members, Michael Cram and David Paetkau.

Johnson last year put on her iconic pink Power Rangers suit and busked in downtown Toronto after she surpassed her $75,000 Indiegogo fundraising goal. “I’m not very squeamish. It was a lot of fun,” she told the Hollywood Reporter  about her mini-concert; Johnson’s friend David Yost, who was Blue Ranger on Power Rangers , came up with the idea.

The movie is set to begin shooting in Guelph, Ontario, Canada this July.

New Power Rangers Movie Selects Director

One month shy of a year since production was first announced, both The Wrap and Variety report that negotiations are now in play to nab the director for the upcoming Mighty Morphin Power Rangers film.

Israelite seemed like a long shot for the job, given the popularity of the property and his relative inexperience helming feature films, but after a presentation that blew away studio execs, Lionsgate is said to have decided to give Israelite the job fairly quickly.
