No Pink Spandex Funding for 2012

Last month, I wrote about the challenges that No Pink Spandex is having. You can read all about it here, but I’ll recap what is desperately needed: We need equipment.

David Yost being interviewed at Anime Festival Orlando 2010

All of this is going to take $7000 to make a difference. Many people don’t know how much it costs to produce video, so I’m giving you the context now. Here are the items that we need:

- Custom PC from CyberPowerPC.com

- Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 Production Premium

- Panasonic AG-HVX200A HD Camera

Every single dime donated will be going to these three items. Costly, yes, but I have faith that the goal can be reached…especially when you will be getting cool stuff: Advertisement on our popular website, rare No Pink Spandex prints (trust me, you really want this), No Pink Spandex DVD with never-before-seen footage, the opportunity to be a host on our show, and much more!

I’ve started an IndieGoGo page for our fundraising efforts: http://www.indiegogo.com/nps

There you can find out more information and get your perks. I’ll be adding a couple more perks along the way as well, so keep checking back. Please share this link with your friends and help No Pink Spandex grow bigger and better!

Sincerely,
Lisa J

No Pink Spandex at New York Comic Con and New York Anime Festival

There weren’t any Power Ranger alumni at New York Comic Con and New York Anime Festival, but this is the time where we get to see how many geeks don their Power Ranger pride. Good news is that there were many! Bad news…well, we’ll get to that.

This year was the first time that NYCC and NYAF were at the same time at Jacob Javits Center. You could definitely tell. The days I went (Saturday and Sunday) were so packed that you could hardly walk. It got a bit better on Sunday in certain areas of the convention center, but not by much. The other flaw was that Anime Festival seemed like it was an afterthought. They had their own artist alley that was put off to the side. The “screening rooms” were a few flat screen televisions with some couches on a balcony. Great in principle, but you could hardly hear what was being played. And if you were looking for anime-related vendors, you’d have to go through the maze that was Comic Con because all the vendors were jammed on the show floor. The show floor definitely had designated areas for different categories, but anime seemed the most disorganized.

The mass exodus on Sunday the 16th.

I say all of this because anime cons have become a way to find Power Ranger- and Super Sentai-related things, and that was my hope. Comic Con is so broad that it’s harder to find our small niche. With anime cons, it’s a little easier. Admittedly, I’m not an anime fan, but at the same time I wouldn’t want a well-established convention get melded into another con. New York City doesn’t have many geek cons, so I wouldn’t want more disappearing, especially the types of cons that have made a little home for Power Rangers.

Now let’s get to the good stuff! Comic Con estimated 105,000 attendees for the weekend, and it sure felt like it! There were more Ranger cosplayers, Ranger and Sentai merch, and LOTS of people in Power Ranger shirts. I took pictures of the cosplayers I ran into (and sometimes ran after):

Letter from the Editor – Just Started 1st Grade!

On September 17, 2011, No Pink Spandex turned six years old. We have our Jansport backpack filled with newly bought notebooks, sharpened pencils, and big erasers waiting to dry out by the school year’s end.

I don’t know about you, but 1st grade was awesome. I made best friends there, who I fought and made up with all the time. My first grade teacher was great too. She taught us big vocabulary words and kept us current with the first Iraq war every morning. I cried a lot too. Sometimes for no good reason. When my 6-year-old self finally grew a pair, it was the best feeling to overcome all those nonsensical tears. First grade was a new start. A new beginning. A rude awakening. Pick yourself up, girl. This isn’t “nap time” anymore.

I say all of this because NPS is seeing its new beginning as well. I’m at a crossroads. It’s either get by with the resources I have now, or really invest into what can make NPS the best it can be. Obviously, the latter is more epic, so I’ll break it down for you as transparent as I can be. Have to get the bad news out of the way: We need equipment.

As you all may know, the NPS crew goes to different conventions around the country, films them, and edits them for online consumption. We help you by producing videos, you help us by watching and telling your friends. In 2010, we’ve been to 4 different conventions. In 2011 (not including NPS Live), 1. Why the decrease?

- Computers are dying. If I can’t run my normal editing programs, then there are no videos. This is the current problem, and this has been the problem for the past 2-3 years. I’ve been getting by by fixing things along the way, but I can only patch up so much.

- Software needs major upgrades. To make a long story short, new upgrades to my editing programs will make the editing process more efficient. More efficiency means faster production, and we all like fast things. Unfortunately, upgrades aren’t just chump change. They’re some real dollars and cents.

- We’re still in standard definition. The videos that you’ve seen have looked great because my current camera is a great SD camera, but it has kept us back from what I envision for NPS. With the bump to HD, I can produce better quality videos, and further down the line, produce an actual fan film. The thing is, there’s bad HD and good HD. Of course, we want the latter.

All of this is going to take $6500 to make a difference. Many people don’t know how much it costs to produce video, so I’m giving you the context now.

You must be asking, “What’s the good news?”

The good news is that I’m dead set on reaching that goal. I’m going to do everything I can to make it happen. If I have to go back to my high school roots and bake some brownies, then so be it. There will be an IndieGoGo fundraising page for NPS soon and yes, there will be perks for different donations.

Just to be clear, I’m not asking for a “free ride”. I’ve invested a lot in NPS thus far, so there’s nothing “free” around here, lol! Please know that I will be working hard to raise funds so that in the end, everyone can enjoy the results.

The new 6-year-old,
Lisa J

P.S. Oh yeah, and the good news is No Pink Spandex Live in 2012! :)
